The 2004 tsunami disaster in South Asia led founder Peder Kvendset to the idea of a safety- and security related information services for travelers. AidCom was established June 1, 2006, and the first service, TravelAlert was officially launched in February 2008. The company specializes in news monitoring and time critical communication systems. AidCom contributes towards increased safety and security for travelers by informing them on critical situations and imminent dangers at their destination. The information is distributed by SMS. AidCom gathers information by monitoring global news 24-7, using hundreds of international, regional and local news sources. In addition, AidCom subscribes to updates on extreme weather and earthquakes from various state observatories.
The company is 40% owned by Nordic insurance giant Tryg, which offers the TravelAlert service to their policy holders.
